History of Ferdowsi Tomb

During the reign of Adel Ghazan from 694 to 703 A.H., Amir Esen, the ruler of Tos, ordered the construction of a mausoleum, but the work remained half-finished after his death.

The next ruler did not show any determination to finish it, until the half-built mansion with a small dome that was placed on the grave, turned into a ruin over time and buried the poet’s large wheat field.

This process continued until the era of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar until, by his order, Asif al-Dawlah Shirazi was assigned as the governor of Khorasan to find Ferdowsi’s grave in 1302 AH and prepare a mausoleum for it.

So, this is how the mausoleum came out of obscurity after many years and 2 brick rooms were temporarily built on it so that Asif al-Dawlah could find the opportunity to build a dignified tomb for Ferdowsi. This tomb was registered as one of the national monuments of Iran on 18 December 1354 with registration number 1176.

The fall of Qajar and the rise of Pahlavi

With the fall of the Qajar dynasty and the rise of Reza Shah and the strengthening of the spirit of nationalism among the country’s elites and politicians, the Association of National Artifacts was established in 1301. Mohammad Ali Foroughi, who was the head of the association, put the construction of a shrine for them and their position on the agenda.

With the provision of the initial budget in May 1305, Ki Khosro Shahrukh was assigned to travel to Tus with a group to determine the exact burial place of Ferdowsi. In this way, the construction of the tomb started in 1307.

With the approval of the association’s plan on Mehr 28, 1312, the construction of the tomb began under the supervision of Hossein Larzadeh. In 1313, it was ready for operation at the same time as “Hazareh Ferdowsi” celebration.

The exterior architecture of the tomb:

In general, it represents the external structure of the tomb.

The tomb building has a square structure and its total area is 1043 square meters. This place has stairs on all sides that make access to this building easier. In the design of the tomb, much attention has been paid to the tomb of Cyrus in Pasargad. Also, the tomb consists of 3 basic parts: tombstone, tomb platform and staircase area.

Cubic building

The main building is located on a platform and is 18 meters high. This building is designed in the form of a simple cube, which contains seven smaller cubes. These cubes are placed on top of each other in such a way that they form a large cubic building.

  • The first cube with a length of 28 meters and a height of 1.70 meters acts as the foundation of the building. This base is probably responsible for supporting and stabilizing all higher cubes.
  • The second cube: this cube is 20 meters long and approximately two meters wide.
Therefore, it is used as a walk. On the west side of this cube, there is a door that used to be the entrance to the burial chamber before the renovation. There was also a hatch on the eastern side that was closed after the burial was moved to the basement and rebuilt.
  • The third cube is made with dimensions of 15×15 meters and the fourth cube with dimensions of 13×13 meters. Both of them are placed on top of each other with an approximate height of 70.1 meters and a distance of one meter from each other. An inscription is installed on the south wall of the fourth cube. This inscription describes the construction of this building and the celebration of Ferdowsi by the National Artifacts Association.
  • The fifth cube, which is designed with a height of nearly 10 meters, shows the general view of the tomb.
Parts of the Shahnameh are on four marble panels measuring 1.5 x 4 meters. Each board contains twelve verses.
  • The sixth and seventh cubes, The sixth cube has a height of 1.80 and a length of 6 meters, and the seventh cube is the roof of the tomb.

The entrance to the interior of the tomb is located on the west side of the building. Two stairs located on the south and north sides lead to the basement and burial chamber. On the walls of these stairs, there are six stone panels with reliefs. Therefore, these signs were installed on both sides of the entrance corridor to the burial room before the renovation.

These panels show stories of “Battle of Rostam”, “War of Iranians and Turanians” and “Battle of Rostam and Sohrab” on the south side of the stairs. It shows “Darius the Great on the Imperial Throne”, “Two Emperors in the Presence of the Sassanid Emperor”, and “The Arrival of the King of India to the Court of Iran” on the north side of the stairs.

The size of the basement is 30×30 meters and its depth is five meters. There are ventilation tunnels around the base of the building. In the past, the tomb was located in a room measuring 5×5 meters and its entrance was opened from the second passage outside the tomb. Finally, after the changes, the cemetery has been moved to its current location. In order to stabilize the structure, twin columns with a height of five meters are placed in the four corners of the room.

The southern and eastern walls of this part of the building also contain stone reliefs of Shahnameh stories and two texts engraved in Nastaliq script. These reliefs and artistic texts add beauty to the section and emphasize the cultural and historical influence of the Shahnameh in the design of the tomb.
