Given its strategic geographical location and the presence of an international runway, this airport is recognized as one of the busiest and largest airports after Tehran and Mashhad. The airport operates flights to over 35 destinations, with both domestic and international flights scheduled daily.
It is equipped with advanced tools and equipment, ensuring cargo and delivery services are carried out with utmost security. The history of the airport dates back to 1308 when the facilities were quite limited, and flights operated as round trips from Shiraz to cities like Isfahan, Mashhad, and Tehran. With the passage of time, urban developments, the travel of official dignitaries, and a lack of sufficient facilities for wide-bodied aircraft, there arose a need for a more expansive aviation infrastructure.
Therefore, in 1340, the groundwork was laid for constructing a new airport with enhanced and modern equipment, as well as a higher flight capacity. Eventually, in 1345, the airport was commissioned as Shiraz International Airport.
The new airport, spanning over 500 hectares, featured an asphalt runway, had a higher passenger capacity, and could accommodate wide-bodied flights throughout the day. After the Islamic Revolution in Iran, the name of Shiraz International Airport was changed to Shahid Dastghib Shiraz Airport.
Furthermore, in 2005, a new and modern passenger terminal with a high capacity and state-of-the-art facilities was built. This terminal is equipped with advanced tools and offers welfare services for travelers. In 1393, an international terminal was also inaugurated at the airport to cater to international passengers.

It facilitates contact with various flights during their operations. The significance of the control tower at the airport includes managing air traffic, planning the guidance and movement of airplanes, controlling and directing flights, disseminating information to pilots and crews, emergency management, and assisting pilots in case of issues.
