History of Baghdad Airport

Baghdad International Airport, formerly known as Saddam International Airport, is one of the most critical entry and exit points in Iraq. This airport was inaugurated in 1366 during the regime of Saddam Hussein. The design and construction of the airport were part of extensive development programs executed throughout Saddam Hussein’s rule.

The primary goal of constructing this airport was to upgrade transport infrastructures and enhance comfort facilities for passengers. After the occupation of Iraq by the United States in 2003 and the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime, the airport’s name was changed from Saddam International Airport to Baghdad International Airport. This renaming symbolized the significant changes that occurred in the political and social structure of Iraq.

In the 1990s, due to international sanctions against Iraq, the airport was almost entirely shut down. During this period, only limited flights were conducted for humanitarian aid or under the supervision of the United Nations.

Following 2003, with political and security changes in Iraq, the airport witnessed numerous reconstructions and developments. These renovations included refurbishing the airport’s runways, aerial navigation systems, terminals, and other passenger-related facilities. Additionally, more effective and modern security measures were implemented to provide passengers with safer travel opportunities.

Currently, Baghdad International Airport hosts numerous international and domestic flights and plays a significant role in Iraq’s communications and economy. With recent advancements, the airport has transformed into one of the most crucial air traffic hubs in the region.
